LASTING LEATHER LAB @ CIRCULAR TEXTILE DAYS
18/19 September, den Bosch Congress centre 1931
Our presentation can be found at the Innovationforum (knowledge area)
The leather industry processes leather into various end products. During processing, over 40% of waste is generated from approximately 30,000 hides a day. This is a serious amount of waste and an opportunity for biomaterials in the near future. The reason for Material Sense LAB to initiate LASTING LEATHER LAB, where left over leather is transformed into new viable products. At Circular textiles days we present our latest showcase: a series of bags and accessories that were created from unsorted small and medium sizes of the leather streams. Graduates of SintLucas Creative Craftsmen Leather turned the clippings into luxurious goods with a long life span and combined leather with left over textiles.
Thanks to graduates SintLucas Lieke, Dewy, Silka, Demi, Woomy and supervisor Charlotte Versteegh.

Project background
The project was initiated by Simone de Waart of Material Sense LAB at the request of the leather processing industry. Over the past years , the project involved designers, researchers and companies from the leather industry. Within Lasting leather LAB, we developed strategies for the for the exchange of knowledge with the various experts of our immensly grown network on the materials, technology, processing possibilities and the market. Through collaborations we create new supply chains to turn left over leather into new viable and future proof applications. Through follow up projects such as Circular Chain Project (CKP) “Leather waste on the R-Ladder” and the research project “ProPHBV” as supported by RVO, new material developments evolved and continue.
